Papers of the Edwards family consist largely of correspondence of Captain Caleb M. Edwards pertaining to the shipping business along the east coast, dated at various cities including Hartford and New Haven Conn.; Providence, R.I.; Elizabeth Port, N.J.; and Riverhead, Patchogue, Speonk and other locations in New York. A number of letters are from Caleb's wife, Clarissa Petty Edwards; other correspondents include James M. Edwards, David M. Edwards, Charles O. Edwards, E. h. Hawkins, Joseph W. Udall and Sarah E. Downs. Letters pertain to family and personal matters as well as farming, surveying, and other Edwards family occupations. There are also some financial and banking records.

The Edwards family of Sayville includes James Morris Edwards (b.1808) and his sons David M. Edwards, Caleb M. Edwards and John S. Edwards. All the sons were seafarers, captains or masters of coastal schooners. Caleb (1842-1872) died in a shipwreck of which John was the only survivor.
